Pakistan's Electricity Price Likely to Increase by Rs. 1.72 Per Unit

Electricity consumers across Pakistan — including users of K-Electric — may be facing yet another increase in their power bills, adding further financial pressure on households and businesses already struggling with rising living costs.

The potential hike comes after the Central Power Purchasing Agency requested an increase of Rs. 1.72 per unit under the monthly fuel cost adjustment for April. The request will now be reviewed by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, which has scheduled a formal hearing on June 2 before making a final decision on whether the increase will be approved.

If NEPRA gives the green light, the additional charge will be reflected in electricity bills for consumers across the country — from ordinary households to commercial and industrial users.

According to official figures, Pakistan generated approximately 9.50 billion units of electricity during April, with the average cost of generation reported at Rs. 9.42 per unit.

How Pakistan Generated Electricity in April:

Hydropower and nuclear energy remained the two biggest contributors to electricity generation during the month, while coal and gas-based power plants also played a significant role in meeting the country’s energy needs. The overall mix of energy sources directly influences generation costs and ultimately determines how much consumers pay on their monthly bills.

Fuel cost adjustments are a routine part of Pakistan’s electricity pricing mechanism — they are applied regularly to reflect changes in the actual cost of generating power and can result in either increases or decreases in consumer bills depending on fuel prices and the energy mix used.

For millions of Pakistanis already stretched thin by inflation and high utility costs, another increase in electricity bills would be unwelcome news. The final decision now rests with NEPRA — and consumers across the country are anxiously watching for clarity on what their next electricity bill will look like.
