More than 763,000 Pakistani workers moved abroad for employment in 2025 through official and legal channels, reinforcing Pakistan’s position as one of the world’s largest labour-exporting countries.

The latest figures highlight the continued demand for Pakistani skilled and semi-skilled workers in international job markets, particularly in the Middle East, Europe, and other global employment destinations.

Overseas Employment Plays Key Role in Pakistan’s Economy

According to official data shared during a government briefing, overseas employment remains a critical driver of Pakistan’s economy.

Workers who migrate for jobs abroad contribute significantly through remittances, which are financial transfers sent back to families in Pakistan. These remittances help support:

  • Household expenses
  • Education and school fees
  • Healthcare and medical costs
  • Daily living requirements

Economic experts note that remittances remain one of Pakistan’s largest sources of foreign exchange, strengthening the national economy and supporting millions of families.

Government and International Organizations Discuss Labour Migration System

The data was presented during a two-day training session in Islamabad, organized by the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The session was part of an initiative titled “Advancing Safe and Fair Labour Migration”, aimed at improving overseas employment systems and ensuring better protection for migrant workers.

The program is supported by international development partners, including:

  • Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development
  • European Union (EU)
  • GIZ Pakistan

Focus on Safe, Transparent, and Legal Migration

During the training, officials and experts discussed key reforms to improve labour migration processes in Pakistan, including:

  • Transparent recruitment systems
  • Stronger regulation of overseas employment agencies
  • Protection against worker exploitation and fraud
  • Better documentation and legal support for migrant workers

Authorities emphasized the importance of ensuring that Pakistani workers migrate through safe and legal pathways, reducing risks of illegal recruitment and unsafe working conditions abroad.

Strengthening Worker Protection and Rights Abroad

Participants also highlighted the need for stronger international cooperation to safeguard the rights of Pakistani migrant workers.

Key priorities included:

  • Ensuring fair wages and working conditions
  • Protecting workers from exploitation
  • Improving access to legal assistance abroad
  • Enhancing bilateral agreements with destination countries

Experts believe that improved governance in labour migration will enhance worker safety and increase trust in formal migration systems.

Economic Impact of Labour Migration and Remittances

Analysts suggest that strengthening labour migration frameworks will not only protect workers but also boost remittance inflows, which are essential for Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves.

With hundreds of thousands of citizens working abroad, Pakistan continues to rely on overseas employment as a major economic pillar supporting both national income and household stability.
