Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed all relevant departments to take immediate steps to protect residents from the ongoing intense heatwave sweeping across various parts of the province.
The Chief Minister ordered the installation of shaded shelters at busy markets, traffic intersections and other public areas to give people exposed to extreme daytime temperatures a place to find relief. She also instructed authorities to ensure the availability of cold drinking water, fans and other cooling facilities at bus terminals, railway stations, wagon stands and government offices across Punjab.
Educational institutions running summer camps have been specifically directed to make proper arrangements to keep students safe and comfortable in the heat — including adequate cooling systems and sufficient hydration facilities throughout the day.
Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours, with special emphasis on protecting the most vulnerable members of society including women, children and senior citizens. Traffic police have also been instructed not to keep motorcyclists waiting for long periods under direct sunlight — a common cause of heat-related distress during the summer months.
The provincial government says all these measures are aimed at minimizing health risks and helping people across Punjab cope safely with the severe weather conditions currently gripping the province.
