Surgical Instrument Allegedly Left Inside Patient After Heart Surgery in Faisalabad
A reported case of medical negligence in Faisalabad has raised serious concerns about patient safety and hospital operating procedures after a surgical instrument was allegedly left inside a patient during open-heart surgery.
According to reports, a 22-year-old man from Toba Tek Singh, identified as Saqlain, underwent heart surgery on April 4 for treatment of a cardiac condition. However, after returning home, he reportedly continued to suffer from severe chest pain and discomfort following the operation.
Second Surgery Performed After Medical Tests
Due to ongoing health complications, the patient later underwent additional medical examinations. Reports state that diagnostic tests, including an X-ray, revealed a surgical instrument inside his chest that had allegedly been left behind during the initial procedure.
Doctors subsequently performed a second surgery to remove the retained surgical object from the patient’s body.
The incident has drawn public attention and renewed concerns regarding healthcare standards, surgical safety protocols, and patient care practices in hospitals.
Hospital Launches Internal Inquiry
Hospital officials confirmed that an internal investigation has been initiated to determine how the incident occurred and whether negligence was involved during the operation.
Initial findings reportedly suggest that errors in surgical tool counting procedures may have contributed to the incident. However, authorities said final conclusions will only be made after a complete review of operating room records and staff responsibilities.
Medical Experts Stress Importance of Surgical Safety Protocols
Healthcare experts say strict operating room procedures and accurate surgical instrument tracking are critical for preventing incidents involving retained medical items.
Medical negligence cases involving surgical tools left inside patients are considered serious because they can lead to infections, severe pain, complications, and the need for additional surgeries.
Experts also emphasize the importance of patient safety systems, surgical checklists, and hospital quality control measures to reduce medical errors and improve healthcare standards.
Public Concern Grows Over Healthcare Safety Standards
The incident continues to generate concern among the public regarding patient safety, hospital accountability, and healthcare quality assurance in Pakistan.
Authorities have not yet released the complete findings of the inquiry, while further investigation into the reported medical negligence case remains ongoing.
