NASA Plans to Build First Ever City on the Moon by End of 2026

NASA has unveiled ambitious plans to begin construction of humanity’s first permanent base on the Moon by the end of 2026 — a historic step that could change the future of human civilization forever.

The project, known as the Moon Base initiative, is being developed under NASA’s Artemis program and will be located near the Moon’s South Pole — a region believed to contain valuable water ice and other essential resources.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman confirmed that construction activities will kick off this year through uncrewed missions. The first phase, running until 2029, will focus on testing critical technology, identifying suitable landing sites and delivering equipment to the lunar surface. Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mark 1 lander — named Endurance — is expected to carry the first payloads to the Moon in autumn 2026.

Who Is Involved?

Several leading space companies are playing key roles in the project. Lunar Outpost and Astrolab will provide advanced rovers to explore the terrain, while Firefly will deploy hopping drones to scout the surrounding area. These robotic systems will search for water ice and other natural resources that will be essential for supporting future human missions.

How Will the Base Grow?

The base is planned to expand across three distinct phases, with the first human inhabitants expected to arrive between 2029 and 2032. The completed facility will include solar and nuclear power systems, living habitats and advanced mobility vehicles capable of supporting long-duration human presence on the Moon.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $20 billion. NASA has described the initiative as “America’s and humanity’s first outpost on another celestial world” — a stepping stone not just for lunar exploration but for the ultimate goal of sending humans to Mars.

For NASA, this is not just about planting a flag. It is about learning how to live, work and survive on another world — and using those lessons to take humanity further into the universe than ever before.
