Pakistan Plans to Generate 95% of Its Electricity From Renewable Sources by 2040

Pakistan has announced a major long-term energy plan aimed at completely transforming its power sector and greatly reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. Under this new roadmap, the country aims to produce nearly 95 percent of its electricity from renewable and clean energy sources by 2040, with an intermediate target of 60 percent clean energy by 2030.

The plan reflects Pakistan’s growing focus on sustainable development, energy security, and climate resilience, especially as the country continues to face rising fuel import costs and increasing pressure on its national economy. Officials believe that moving toward renewable energy will not only reduce the financial burden of expensive fuel imports but will also help stabilize electricity prices and support long-term economic growth.

According to the plan, Pakistan will rapidly increase investment in solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass energy projects across different parts of the country. Authorities are also working on modernizing the national power grid and upgrading transmission infrastructure to reduce electricity losses and improve overall efficiency in power distribution.

One of the most significant parts of the strategy is the gradual shutdown of nearly 14,000 megawatts of fossil fuel-based power plants by 2035. This step is expected to cut carbon emissions, reduce dependence on imported fuels, and open the door for cleaner and more affordable energy alternatives.

The roadmap also focuses on ensuring that every citizen has access to electricity, with special attention given to underserved and remote areas of the country. There is a strong push to install rooftop solar systems in schools and public institutions to encourage energy independence and bring down operational costs.

Energy experts say this shift toward renewable energy could greatly strengthen Pakistan’s energy security by shielding the country from unpredictable global oil and gas price changes. The transition is also expected to open up new opportunities in the green energy sector, including fresh investment, infrastructure development, and job creation.

The government believes that speeding up the adoption of renewable energy will play a key role in building a more sustainable, reliable, and environment-friendly power system for future generations, while also supporting Pakistan’s broader climate and economic goals.
