Punjab is expected to announce early summer vacations for schools as temperatures continue to rise and heatwave warnings start affecting daily school activities across the province.
The extreme heat, upcoming Eid ul Adha holidays, and weather alerts issued by the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) have pushed authorities to consider closing schools before the usual date. In its advisory covering May, June, and July, the PDMA warned that most districts in Punjab will see temperatures higher than normal during this period.
According to reports, Eid ul Adha holidays are likely to fall from May 27 to May 29. Since May 30 and May 31 are weekend days, the government is considering starting summer vacations from May 27 itself, instead of waiting until June 1.
On the other hand, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has suggested cutting down both summer and winter vacations in the coming years. The goal is to recover lost academic time and increase the total number of school days from 180 to 190 per year.
Meanwhile, private schools have asked the government for permission to run summer camps between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. during the vacation period, so students can continue learning even while schools are officially closed. ✅
