Telenor Moves to Sell Easypaisa Stake and Exit Pakistan After Two Decades

Norway-based telecommunications and technology company Telenor ASA is reportedly considering the sale of its 55 percent stake in Easypaisa Bank — a move that could bring an end to the company’s more than two-decade presence in Pakistan.

According to reports, Telenor has engaged global investment bank Citigroup to evaluate potential strategic options for its shareholding, including a possible sale that could be valued at several hundred million dollars.

Easypaisa has grown into one of Pakistan’s largest and most influential digital financial services platforms, serving millions of users through mobile wallets, digital payments, money transfers and a wide range of banking solutions. The platform is jointly owned by Telenor and China’s Ant Group, which has played a significant role in expanding its digital finance capabilities over recent years.

The reported move comes after Telenor had already exited Pakistan’s telecommunications sector following the completion of the sale of its local telecom operations. If the Easypaisa stake sale goes ahead as expected, it would mark Telenor’s complete and final withdrawal from Pakistan — closing a chapter that began more than 20 years ago.

For millions of Pakistani users who have relied on Telenor’s services over the decades — first through its telecom network and later through Easypaisa’s digital financial platform — the development marks the end of a significant era in Pakistan’s technology and financial services landscape. The company leaves behind a lasting legacy in both industries that helped shape the way Pakistanis communicate and manage money in the digital age.
