Pakistan’s biggest blockbuster, The Legend of Maula Jatt, is set to release in cinemas across China on May 21, 2026, marking a major milestone for the Pakistani film industry and its growing international recognition.
Director Bilal Lashari announced the news on X on May 10, calling the release “a huge moment for Pakistani cinema” and an opportunity for Pakistani storytelling to reach a wider global audience.
Pakistan’s Highest-Grossing Film Heads to China
Released in 2022, The Legend of Maula Jatt became the highest-grossing Pakistani film of all time. The Punjabi-language action drama gained massive popularity for its cinematic visuals, powerful performances, and modern adaptation of classic Punjabi folklore.
The film features an all-star cast including Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, and Humaima Malick.
Its release in China is considered a significant achievement because the Chinese theatrical market is highly competitive and selective when it comes to foreign-language films.
China Release Opens New Opportunities for Pakistani Cinema
Industry experts believe the film’s entry into Chinese cinemas could create new opportunities for Pakistani filmmakers, actors, and production companies in one of the world’s largest entertainment markets.
The move is also expected to strengthen cultural exchange between Pakistan and China beyond trade, infrastructure, and projects linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
Analysts say international screenings like this can help promote Pakistani culture, regional stories, and local cinema on a much larger global platform.
Pakistani Films Previously Released in China
Several Pakistani films have previously reached Chinese audiences in recent years. Parwaaz Hai Junoon was released in Chinese cinemas in 2020, while animated films The Donkey King and Allahyar and the Legend of Markhor were screened in China in 2021.
At the time, The Donkey King became one of the most successful Pakistani films at the Chinese box office, while Allahyar and the Legend of Markhor gained attention as the first China-Pakistan animated co-production.
A Major Global Moment for Pakistani Entertainment
From Punjabi folklore and action-packed storytelling to international cinema screens, The Legend of Maula Jatt represents a major step forward for Pakistani entertainment on the global stage.
The upcoming China release reflects the growing international interest in Pakistani films and highlights the potential for local cinema to expand into new international markets.
