Saudi Arabia Introduces Self-Driving Bus for Hajj Pilgrims

Saudi Arabia has launched a pilot driverless electric bus service for pilgrims in Madinah, taking another big step toward smart and eco-friendly transportation in the Kingdom.

The autonomous shuttle, known as the RoboBus, is currently running inside the courtyard of the historic Quba Mosque — one of Islam’s most important religious sites, visited by thousands of worshippers and pilgrims every year.

The project has been launched by Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority in partnership with regional technology and transport companies, as part of ongoing efforts to modernize travel services for visitors during Hajj and Umrah seasons. The electric RoboBus can carry up to 20 passengers at a time and operates completely without a human driver, using advanced technology to navigate and ensure passenger safety.

The bus uses a combination of artificial intelligence, high-resolution cameras, sensors and LiDAR systems to detect its surroundings, avoid obstacles and move safely through crowded areas. The current route covers around 700 meters within the mosque’s courtyard, making it easier for worshippers to get around while also reducing congestion in busy pedestrian zones.

Authorities confirmed that the pilot project will run for 60 days. During this period, officials will closely monitor safety standards, operational efficiency, passenger experience and compatibility with existing infrastructure. The trial will also collect important mapping and traffic data to support the future expansion of autonomous transport systems across the Kingdom.

Saudi officials believe this project could open the door to wider use of smart transport solutions in major cities and religious destinations across the country. The initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader goals of promoting environmentally friendly transport, cutting emissions and improving services for the millions of pilgrims who visit the holy sites each year.

The RoboBus launch reflects Saudi Arabia’s continued commitment to innovation and emerging technologies, with a strong focus on sustainability, digital transformation and enhancing the overall travel experience for both residents and visitors.
